Artful Middle School Lessons
A collection of my favorite, colorful middle school lessons.
Collaborative Watercolor
This Junior High art project incorporated collaboration with Vincent Van Gogh. Students used watercolor to created part of Van Gogh's Starry Night. The painting was divided into 35 sections and pixilated. Each student received a piece of the painting and practice mixing and creating new colors with watercolor. The result was a masterpiece!
O'Keeffe Inspired Oil Pastel Flowers
Students examined the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe during this lesson. They studied her artistic process and intent. Students specifically learned about her large scale flower paintings. Students selected their own flower imagery and used oil pastels to create O'Keeffe inspired drawings.
Light Painting Photographs
Light painting is a photographic technique in which moving light is captured through long exposures. The students created three different light paintings using a variety of light sources and techniques. The results were stunning.
Projected Portrait Photographs
For this project Junior High students created projected portraits by using a portable projector to transfer an image onto their peer. The imagery was selected from the internet. The students learned about appropriation, the concept of using existing artwork and changing it's meaning by putting it into a different context. Students projected the image onto their partner and by adding the element of portraiture they changed the original intent of the imagery. Faces are blurred to protect the identity of the students.
